Anyone who regularly cooks fried food will know that the smell of frying on curtains can linger even after the kitchen has been cleaned. Because fabric is exposed to the air, tiny particles released while cooking may settle into its fibres. Before resorting to a full wash, a diluted lemon-and-water solution may be an option for suitable fabrics, provided it is tested first.

Why does the smell of frying become trapped in curtains?

When food is fried, heating the oil releases compounds that travel around the room with steam and fine droplets of grease. Some of this material may reach nearby fabrics, including curtains, cloths and upholstered furniture.

Textile fibres can hold on to some of these compounds, allowing the odour to remain for longer. The greater the exposure to smoke and grease, the more difficult it may be to remove the smell completely simply by opening a window.

How can lemon and water help with curtain care?

Lemon contains citric acid and has a distinctive scent, but this does not mean that concentrated lemon juice should be applied directly to every type of fabric. For a light maintenance attempt, the mixture must be well diluted and used only on compatible materials.

A more cautious approach is to lightly dampen a cloth with the solution and wipe a small section of the curtain. There is no need to soak the fabric, especially if the curtain cannot be taken down straight away to dry.

How should you test the mixture before cleaning a curtain?

Before applying any homemade solution, check the curtain label. The manufacturer’s guidance will state whether the fabric can be washed, dampened or treated with certain products.

You should also test it on an inconspicuous area and allow it to dry. Do not continue if there is any colour change, staining or alteration to the texture. Delicate, patterned or specially finished fabrics require extra care.

Can ventilation prevent the smell of frying on curtains?

Yes. Ventilation is one of the simplest ways to reduce the concentration of odours and particles indoors. While cooking, keep doors and windows open where possible, and use the kitchen extractor hood or fan if available.

It is also helpful to keep curtains away from the hob whenever possible. The less direct contact they have with smoke and grease, the less residue is likely to build up in the fibres.
