The partnership between Vista Alegre and Netflix turns the world of "Bridgerton" into a porcelain collection inspired by the series’ visual style. The project strengthens the Portuguese brand’s international presence and draws on the so-called "Netflix effect" as a cultural and consumer phenomenon.
During an exclusive visit to Vista Alegre’s factory in Ílhavo, JN saw how the new Bridgerton-inspired tableware collection is made. Created in collaboration with Netflix, the initiative brings together contemporary design and Portuguese craft tradition.
The tour offered a close look at the exceptional standards and skilled handwork behind every item, in a process that continues to uphold traditional methods within an increasingly automated industry. Across the factory, it was possible to follow several manufacturing stages and see how the collection is shaped around floral motifs inspired by the series’ aesthetic.
The collaboration between Vista Alegre and Netflix places Portuguese design and tradition in the international spotlight, seeking to turn the global success of "Bridgerton" into a tangible experience beyond the screen.
With several seasons among the most watched English-language titles of all time, the series remains a regular feature in the top 10 in more than 90 countries. In Portugal, it stayed among the most popular content for weeks, reflecting the so-called "Netflix effect", which turns entertainment content into cultural, social and economic trends.
Speaking to JN, Filippo Zuffada, Netflix’s senior global director of Consumer Products, stresses that "today’s fans do not simply watch a story. When a universe resonates with them, they want to experience it and bring parts of that world into their everyday lives". In Bridgerton’s case, he adds, it is a world "with a distinct aesthetic: romance, intrigue, celebration and social rituals", making its extension into the world of tableware a natural fit.
"Tea, conversation and carefully curated social occasions are central elements of this world," he says, arguing that a porcelain collection makes it possible to recreate that atmosphere away from the screen.
Vista Alegre and Netflix: how the partnership began
The collaboration is the first partnership between Vista Alegre and Netflix. "We have had some contact with Netflix fairly regularly for some time. It came up in conversation. It was a conversation that came up. ‘Well, why not? Let’s give it a try’," explains Nuno Barra, Vista Alegre’s vice-president, who plays a central role in the company’s internationalisation strategy and brand development.
The collection was developed from the series’ visual references. "Netflix sent us some references from the series, whether from wallpaper, some of the pieces that appeared, or textiles," he explains. "We then took those references and worked on them through our Vista Alegre interpretation."
Filippo Zuffada highlights the value of collaboration between creative teams. "Collaborations work best when both partners bring their full expertise to the table," he says. "Vista Alegre are experts in their craft, while we are experts in the Bridgerton universe." The aim, he stresses, is to ensure authenticity. "The collaboration needs to feel like a natural extension of the series’ universe, rather than simply two logos placed side by side."
The move fits into a global trend of turning fictional worlds into real-life experiences. In Bridgerton’s case, that impact already has a name: Regencycore, reflected in the popularity of elements such as tea, classic décor and historically inspired fashion. For Netflix, this extension is deliberate. "Consumer products are one of the most powerful ways for a fan to keep experiencing a story after the credits roll," says the streaming platform’s director.
"A series can sometimes feel very distant, but this connection with a real product is a way of bringing the series itself into people’s lives," Nuno Barra adds, stressing that "suddenly, at home, we can recreate a highly exclusive tea moment."
Bridgerton porcelain collection and global recognition
The pieces will be sold across several international markets, with production adjusted according to demand. "It varies greatly depending on the market’s response," says the Vista Alegre executive. "If the market responds well, more is produced. If it responds less well, less is produced."
Despite its direct link to the series, the collection is not currently part of the production’s visual world. "This collection does not appear in the series. At least, it has not appeared so far," Nuno Barra acknowledges, while leaving open the prospect of this happening in future. "Could it appear in the next season? It depends entirely on Netflix and the producer."
For the historic Ílhavo company, the synergy is a strategic instrument for international positioning. "Vista Alegre works continuously on building recognition. It very much needs to strengthen its international recognition," says Nuno Barra.
The association with a global phenomenon is therefore seen as a natural step. "In the case of ‘Bridgerton’, which is a series with international, global success, it is excellent for us to be involved in this project."
For Netflix, Filippo Zuffada also points to the collection’s capacity to bring together different audiences-fans of the series and consumers drawn to design and heritage brands-broadening the initiative’s reach.
The Netflix effect beyond the screen
The so-called "Netflix effect" shows that audiences no longer merely watch content. They want to experience it. From music and fashion to tourism and homeware, consumption has become an emotional extension of stories.
