Limescale building up inside an electric kettle may be visible as marks or a whitish coating on the base and inner walls. To get rid of these deposits, some manufacturers advise using white vinegar or dedicated descaling products. However, the method differs between models and the manufacturer’s instructions should always be followed.

Why does vinegar help to clean an electric kettle?

Limescale consists mainly of mineral deposits left behind by water. The harder the water being used, the more likely these residues are to build up in the appliance.

Vinegar contains acetic acid, which can react with mineral deposits and make them easier to remove. Manufacturers including Tefal, De’Longhi and Philips identify white vinegar as an alternative for descaling certain models.

How should white vinegar be used in an electric kettle?

There is no single formula that applies to every appliance. De’Longhi, for instance, recommends a mixture of one part white vinegar to two parts water in its descaling guidance. Other manufacturers specify different concentrations and waiting times.

For certain models, Philips advises adding white vinegar to water and allowing the solution to work after heating it, whereas Tefal sets out a process using vinegar without heating the mixture. The appliance manual should therefore take precedence over instructions found online.

Is it necessary to boil vinegar in the kettle?

Not always. This is one of the areas requiring the greatest care. Some manufacturers advise not heating the vinegar solution directly, instead leaving it in place for a specified period, while other models have different procedures.

For example, Tefal recommends leaving vinegar to act for one hour without heating it in certain appliances. De’Longhi also advises heating the solution and switching the kettle off before it reaches boiling point, while Smeg provides another model-specific method.

It is therefore not advisable simply to pour neat vinegar into the kettle and switch it on until it boils. The manufacturer’s specific guidance should determine the concentration, heating method and contact time.

What should be done after descaling?

Once the solution has had time to work, it should be discarded completely. The kettle must then be rinsed thoroughly to remove both the vinegar and any loosened deposits.

Some manufacturers recommend boiling and discarding clean water more than once before using the appliance again. For certain models, Tefal advises rinsing five or six times, while De’Longhi recommends boiling and discarding clean water twice.

Can vinegar extend an electric kettle’s lifespan?

Regular descaling may help the appliance continue operating properly. Philips states that periodically removing limescale extends the kettle’s lifespan, while Tefal explains that deposits on the heating element can impair heat transfer to the water.

How often this is needed depends chiefly on water hardness and frequency of use. Some manufacturers recommend monthly descaling in hard-water areas, whereas appliances used with softer water may need attention less often.

Using white vinegar in an electric kettle is therefore not merely a household tip: it is a descaling technique recognised by several manufacturers. The important point is not to regard one method as universally suitable, since the concentration, action time and need for heating can vary from one model to another.
